Udayana University plants 3,000 mangroves

The Udayana University Sustainable Development centre planted 3,000 mangroves in Nusa Dua over the weekend.
“We took part in a mangrove tree planting program with students and the community in an effort to preserve the mangrove trees,” said Dr Ketut Gede Dharma Putra, the Head of Sustainable Development studies at Udayana University.

The activity of mangrove tree planting is in accordance with the University’s celebration of Earth Day which takes place on April 22.

“Every chance we get we mobilize students and the community to involve themselves in tree planting,” Dr Putra added.
Dr Putra explained that the University is currently working alongside PT Jasamarga Toll Bali and the Forestry service to set up a routine mangrove tree planting program.

“We are working alongside PT Jasamarga Toll Bali as they have agreed to conserve the mangrove trees because the construction of the new toll road resulted in the damaging of a considerable amount of the mangrove ecosystem,” Dr Putra said.

Head of Community Relations of PT Jasamarga Toll Bali, Drajat Hari Suseno added that the company will continue to engage in mangrove tree planting as a part of their corporate social responsibility program.

“We will continue to do the planting and maintenance on an ongoing basis around the toll road corridor,” Suseno said.

“It is our duty to cultivate the mangrove trees as we built on top of the mangrove trees in the construction of the toll road,” he added.
